The Little Things That Find Us

As told by Squirrel, with frequent interruptions from Bee, Cow, and Frog

Hi. Squirrel here.

I was selected to write this because I have excellent eyesight, quick reflexes, and a very flexible relationship with staying on topic. Bee disagreed. She had prepared a spreadsheet called “Animal Friend Distribution & Risk Management,” but Cow accidentally leaned on it and Frog said the font felt “emotionally restrictive.” So here we are.

If you are reading this, congratulations.

One of us has successfully escaped.

We are Cow, Frog, Bee, and yours truly. Depending on who you ask, we are either a quiet little kindness project, a strategically deployed logistics operation, or a breakout with really good messages. Bee would like it noted that it was not a breakout. I would like it noted that she has used the phrase “strategically deployed logistics operation” seven times already.

The truth is, we were never meant to sit in a collection waiting to be added to a cart. We were made to travel. Some of us will be left in unexpected places, waiting for the right person to notice. Others may quietly hitch a ride inside a Poetic Magnets order and arrive with a new friend. We do not always know where we are headed, but that is part of what makes the whole thing special.

Animals have a way of making the world feel softer without even trying. Cow says that is because sometimes people simply need someone to walk up to the fence and act like they were worth coming over for. Bee says it is because a person who slows down long enough to watch a bee in the flowers has already given their mind a small break. Frog says the world has been trying to get your attention all along; it just does not shout very loudly. I think all of that sounds right, although I am mostly responsible for reminding people that squirrel business is, in fact, important business.

When your head is full of everything you need to do, everything you are worried about, and everything you are trying not to feel, it is easy to forget there is still a whole living world around you. Then a bird lands nearby. A bee moves through the flowers. A cow puts her head over a fence. A squirrel does something mildly unnecessary but entertaining. For a moment, the thoughts taking up all the room in your head get a little quieter.

That is what we hope to do too.

Our human—the owner of Poetic Magnets—has always had a soft spot for animals. People have called her Snow White more than once because animals seem to find their way to her. Someone even told her, “I picture the scene from Ace Ventura when he walks into his apartment, and I think that’s you.”

Cow thought that sounded sweet. Bee had questions about sanitation. Frog wanted to know whether the apartment had plants. I thought it explained why the four of us were probably inevitable.

We may be silly and a little chaotic, but each of us carries something people need to hear more often: You matter. You are loved. You are enough. Be kind to yourself. Remember you are amazing. Those are not complicated words, but sometimes the things that help us through a hard day are not complicated either. Sometimes all it takes is a little nudge to remember what is already true.

If one of us found you, take a second to receive it. Maybe we are simply a cute little magnet. Or maybe you found us on a day when you needed those words more than anyone could have known.

What happens next is yours to decide. Keep us if the reminder is something you need. Give us to someone who could use it more. Or, when the time feels right, let us escape again somewhere appropriate for the next person to discover.

Bee would love to know exactly where every one of us ends up. Cow, Frog, and I voted against it. Maybe one of us will live on a refrigerator for five years. Maybe one will cross a state line tucked inside somebody’s bag. Maybe one will make someone smile in a place no one would expect. We like that the rest of the story belongs to the people who find us.

There is one more little secret, now that you are already here: you will not find this story while casually browsing the Poetic Magnets website. This is a small corner of the internet for the people one of us has already reached. Maybe you found one somewhere unexpected. Maybe one quietly slipped into an order. Or maybe someone who found one shared this little secret with you.

However you got here, welcome. You are in on it now.

With quick paws, kind hearts, and one extremely stressed Bee,

Squirrel
on behalf of Cow, Frog, Bee, and Poetic Magnets
